Lots of fun!
Bought this for a work team-building meeting and it was a blast. Since we were allotted a specific time we didn’t get to finish but it was not too hard or too easy. Plan on putting set back together and playing with family.

Stargazer's Manor is a Great Entry Point to Escape Room Games
I played this game with my wife and two sons in a hotel room while out of town on a mini-vacation. While we've done an actual escape room before, this was our first time playing one of the lot of games that seek to emulate that experience. The setting is 1869 and a well-respected astronomer has not been seen since the untimely passing of his wife. Strange happenings and noises have been reported from his home. It is up to you to solve the mystery at the Stargazer's Manor! The game consists of 5 sealed envelopes and a code wheel. You will also need a timer. I used my iPhone's built-in timer. The timer is set to 2 hours for 3-5 players and 1.5 hours for 6-8 players. The initial puzzle is fairly easy and allows you to put in the correct code in the code wheel to unlock (open) the first of the envelopes. Solve another puzzle to unlock the next envelope. Rinse and repeat a few more times. Finish in the allotted time and you may, or may not...escape the room. I was pleasantly surprised that there are actually 4 different endings you can get depending on how well you do in the game. Also, there is one decision you have to make at the end that also effects gameplay. My family finished with 32 minutes to spare and we reached what I consider to be the "perfect" ending. We did use two hints early in the game because we were a little confused as to what to do. I chalk it up to being noobs to these types of games. Once we got in the groove, though, we were fine. As far as difficulty goes, I'd say it's right down the middle between easy and hard. For someone new to escape room games, I think this is a perfect entry point. If you think you may want or need hints, you will need to have internet access handy. Hints are available at the ThinkFun website. We had a tablet available, which also allowed us to take advantage of the period music playlists that ThinkFun has put together on their website. We did that as well, and I think it did add a little atmosphere to the experience. The playlists are playable via either Spotify or Pandora. If you want to go all out, the website also provides costume suggestions and reference photos from that time period. Overall, we had a fun time. I think the age recommendation of 10 is probably spot on. My 9-year old was able to help a little bit, but not terribly so. My 7-year old was really a non-factor for solving the puzzles, but did enjoy opening the envelopes when needed. Regardless, we spent some time together as a family and that's always a win. The game recommends 3-8 players. We played the game with four players, with two doing most of the work. I think two adults would be fine playing this game. And I can't imagine playing with more than six, as I don't think there's enough different things to work on at a given time for more than that. I do think the story ends up taking a backseat to the puzzle solving and there is some disconnect between the two. I'm going to say you could mitigate that a little by really playing up the story text more than we did. So is this a replacement for an actual escape room experience? No. But it's a much cheaper and convenient alternative that will give you a "similar" feeling. Finally, there is nothing that you have to destroy in this game, so it can be re-used! So open those envelopes carefully. ThinkFun's website gives instructions on how to put everything back where it was, which is really nice if you want to give it to a friend after you're done. We will definitely try the sequel, Secret of Dr Gravely’s Retreat, which I hear is a little more challenging.

Family game, Too easy
So quality is good. Story line is meh but acceptable, the issue is the challenge level was perfect for a family with kids 8-13… not really a challenge for the adults. Additionally, I don’t think it should ever be called 3-8 persons. More like 3-5 persons max. The kids had a blast. We dressed up, but there’s not a whole lot to do for the adults

Easy but fun.
I adore the Escape Game phenomenon, and was excited to try out this board game attempt to capture the same type of feeling and fun. Here’s a SPOILER FREE look at ThinkFun’s home version. Basic Gameplay: There is a brief instruction manual that introduces the concept of the game and sets the stage, but really everything the players need to know is explained on the various pieces that will be part of the game. At the beginning the players are presented with five sealed envelopes depicting various areas of the Manor and the first Scene Card. The card sets up the story context for the game and walks the players through how the solution wheel works in a nice little intro. It then points players to the first envelope to begin the game proper. The solution wheel is particularly well done. Solutions to each puzzle / envelope are indicated by paired colors and symbols, and if correctly entered into the wheel a symbol matching the current puzzle will be shown in two places on the wheel, indicating that envelope should then be opened. General Thoughts: Stargazer’s Manor is well designed and produced, and reasonably thematic. The puzzles make sense and are pretty well held together with the story framing. The quality of components is high, particularly at the price point. A good job was done overall evoking a location and providing some hands on puzzling without getting crazy in the cost department, but there is of course a visceral feeling to the exploration of an Escape Room that can’t be captured in a primarily 2d game. The box says it accommodates 3-8 players, and given this type of game can only be played with a given group once we went with the maximum to get as many people involved as possible. It may have been because all but one of us have previously played an actual Escape Room and were experienced puzzlers, but we didn’t need nearly that many people and it was tough keeping everyone involved since it’s mostly a “one puzzle at a time” experience. Four of us would have been plenty, and that’s the number my intuition recommends trying this with. We found the puzzles on the easy side, but still had fun and again it might have been because of our experience level. The game tends to point you rather directly at the next thing to solve, which is a bit of unnecessary handholding given how few things there are to choose between. Outside of possible tape damage to some paper pieces if you aren’t careful when opening things, none of the components are permanently marked while playing. Combined with instructions on the website on how to put everything back in the proper envelopes when finished, the game can be packed back up afterwards and given to a new group to try. Nice touch by ThinkFun. Summary So in conclusion while Escape the Room: Mystery at The Stargazer’s Manor is not quite equal to its inspirational namesake and tends to the easy side, it’s still a fun experience well worth trying out. ThinkFun has another out already (Secret of Dr. Gravely’s Retreat) which I’ll definitely try sometime.

Good game, but the others are better
My family and I have played various at-home escape room games. While this was enjoyable, it wasn’t as stimulating as the others. It was a little dumbed-down in comparison to the other versions we’ve played. It’s definitely good as a beginner set, though.

Arrived damaged
Bought this for my boyfriends birthday but haven't had a chance to play it yet. The box arrived scuffed and torn but the shipping box was intact. The product is listed as new but it looked like it was used for many years and not taken care of then returned and shipped out. Currently sending it back and waiting on a replacement. Hopefully the next one is in better condition. **Edit - Second box arrived and the shipping box has zero damage but the product is again damaged. Less scuffing on the front but there's a huge chunk of the side is just ripped off.

A lot of fun!
This was our second at-home escape room game and we were so impressed with the packaging and presentation. The plot was fun, and the puzzles were hard but not too hard. A really fun evening and highly recommend! Took about two hours for a group of three adults.

Great fun for my son and I
My 7 year son has been interested in escape room puzzle games for some time. We have done some escape rooms with Alexa on our Amazon Echo. Last Christmas, we also did a (different) board game one with my sister and niece. However, that one was (for us) fairly difficult, and it ended up being mostly my sister and I that did it as it seemed too difficult for the kids (and it was pretty difficult for us). Recently, he has been wanting to do another. I have been trying to convince him to wait until the next time my sister visits, but he did not like that idea as he got left out. He wanted one for us to do just the two of us. I did some research and it sounded like this was one of the easier ones. It is listed as for being for 3-8 players and ages 10 plus, but I saw other reviewers mention playing just 2 players and it being easy, so I took a chance. It was just right and I am very happy with my purchase. We had to think, but we never got too stuck. It was fun. Plus I love how they have on the thinkfun website instructions for repackaging it so you can give it to someone else to use. The previous escape room we did, you had to rip some of it up so it had to be thrown away once used. With this one, I can at least now give it to my sister and niece to do. I definitely would recommend it, but I would say it is on the easier side for an escape room game. This was great for us, but escape room experts would likely find it too easy.

Beautiful material, but really too easy
(warning: micro-spoiler inside this review) This game is designed for a group of 3 to 8 persons and a 90 min game session, but I would strongly disadvise to play it with a group larger than 4: we were 2 players and it only took us 55 minutes to solve all the riddles of the game. First of all, almost all the riddles are sequential and follow quite a linear path; meaning that most of the time all the players will solve the same riddle together. Then, the riddles themselves are easy, even really easy if you are used to escape games and escape rooms, so you won't need 6+ brains to solve them - unless you've never played an escape game before or attend to play it with a group of kids. Good thing is, the game material is very beautiful, and the 'packaging' (I won't say more) is quite fun to play with :) And another very good point is the possibility to 'restore' the game to its original state, so you'll be able to lend it to your friends! Globally it was a fun game, but based on the gametime / price ratio I'd rather suggest EXIT or UNLOCK. ESCAPE THE ROOM should be for beginners only.

Impressed!
I was impressed with the quality of the game and the number of puzzles. A lot of entertainment is packed into one box. Good value for the money considering the per person price for real escape rooms. We played with 3 people and solved the game within the time frame with one online hint. The game can be re-assembled and re-used by someone else. A good re-gift!
