Works if you do it right.
I was skeptical but this worked like a charm. I used it to blast a hole for a 3/4" PVC sprinkler pipe under my 3' wide front sidewalk. A couple things that I think helped ensure success. First, make sure you are able to keep the pipe as level as possible as you bore. The pipe I was using tended to drop down, which meant the hole was boring down and not across. That wasted time (and ended up boring a much larger cavity under the sidewalk than was necessary) until I was able to keep the pipe level with the underside of the sidewalk. Second, I cemented both ends of the kit to the PVC pipe I was using and then cut them off the pipe after I was done. This means the kit is essentially a "one time" use item, but I'm pretty sure I would have lost the boring end under the sidewalk if I hadn't cemented it on (which I suppose would have resulted in it being a "one time" use item anyway).

Really works - even in Seattle clay!
I had to install low voltage landscape lights at my new house, and I wanted one to demarcate the walkway on the other side of the sidewalk - the planting strip - because the Uber drivers never seem to stop at the correct spot for my house. Of course, there was no way (I thought) to get the wire to feed under the sidewalk and into the planting strip from the yard. Boy was a I wrong - I discovered this product and was very, very skeptical. Sure, some Floridian with sand-for-a-yard might make it work, but could it cut through glacial till and clay in Seattle? I bought it anyway, ran to the local hardware store to grab some 3/4" sched 40 PVC, and figured I had nothing to lose. Took less than five minutes to put some PVC primer and glue on the pipe and stick the whole thing together. The hardest part was digging out the needed feed hole. Even though it says you need to dig a trench as long as the sidewalk/driveway is wide, that's a lie. PVC is slightly flexible, so you really just need a shallow trench a few feet long and just deep enough to undercut your pavement. Hooked the pipe up to the garden hose, turned it on, and I was through the sidewalk in ten minutes or less. Note that this is a one-time use item. When your pipe is through, you leave it in place and cut both the caps off, then throw them away. Your PVC remains buried as conduit. In theory - you could get a couple of PVC couplers and a new length of pipe and re-use the ends if you cut enough off to save it, but it's really not worth it... You could also pull a chase string back if you wanted to pull the pipe out, but again - why make it harder on you. This set is golden... will be using another copy of this set again for a future landscaping project!

Worked great to run electric wire under sidewalk
It probably took me about 10 minutes to work it through the dirt under the sidewalk, because there were some rocks I had to work around.

Great for getting under driveway or sidewalks
This item will save you money and time. I was very impressed how this worked. I increased the original size of pipe so I could run electrical wire under the double driveway. It was good on one side, but you have to try to keep the nozzle pointed up toward the driveway. I ended up starting just a few inches deep on one side, but on the other side it ended up being 4 ft deep. I cut the ends off and ran electrical line to the otherside of driveway. I had a quote done for someone to run the electrical line. It was $400. This item was under $20. Saved me a bunch of money.

Works great!
Gave this a shot to see if it would work. Used it to put some 6 ga wire under my sidewalk for 50 amp service for my RV - not the intending purpose. But it worked. My soil is has some clay in it but once I got the hole dug I put the hose on it and guessing it took less than two minutes to get it to go under the sidewalk. Hole wasn't quite big enough for my wire so ended up taping the wire to the nozzle end PVC pipe and did a second time and got the wire through. Removed the tape from the wire pulled the PVC pipe back out. Compared to a drill system this is a very inexpensive way to go! For sprinkler systems and other type stuff this is a fantastic solution. I was thinking a bit outside of the box for this one but I could not be happier with the results. $5 for the this item and $2.25 for the PVC. If I need to go under a sidewalk again I am definitely going to use this gizmo again.

Check your substrate, youve been warned
So im running low voltage wire for a lighting project and knew i had to go under my sidewalk. i had watched my builders concrete sub pour my neighbors sidewalk and remember seeing a base of 1-2 inch rock under the forms. What i couldnt recall is if they put some sand on top of that. I suspected they hadnt and sure enough, they didnt. Needless to say, this tool did little to get through the rock. what i wound up doing is hand digging out the rock as far as i could reach on both sides. (about a foot each way on 3 foot sidewalk) and then tried the tool. I dont know what i was hoping. maybe a combination of ramming it into the rock and water sort of loosening things might get me through. Maybe it helped a little. in any case after using the pvc/orbit tool ram i busted through. Im guessing on dirt, small gravel, sand or clay its probably pretty useful but i'd strongly, strongly urge anyone considering this project to do a sample dig to see what they're looking at. i might have tried the sleever product over this tool if i had known. It sucked hand digging it and at what point i pondered if the wife would notice my wire in the sidewalk expansion joint. Obviously decided she would plus knew it was a poor idea. Hand digging took me about 30 minutes once i committed to having no choice and giving up wasnt an option.

PVC pipe and PVC tubing are entirely different things!
For the life of me, I could not figure out how to connect this thing to the PVC pipe I was buying at Canadian tire. First I bought 1" PVC pipe, would not fit. Then looked on line, found a note you need to use 1" couplers for 1" pipe. Bought those at CT too, again did not fit. Then bought 3/4" PVC pipe at CT, that didn't fit either. Finally measured the outer diameter of the 1" pipe with calipers, looked on line, PVC pipe with that outside diameter does not exist. Turns out, what CT sells as 1" PVC pipe is actually 1" PVC tubing, which has entirely different dimensions. Bought actual 1" PVC pipe and couplers at a different store and finally got the thing connected. Only took 5 trips to 2 different stores during a pandemic to actually be able to hook this thing up (face palm). Tried to use it tonight, but wasn't getting anywhere with it, which is surprising because the water does come out quite forcefully. I think the key may be to keep the nozzle an inch or so away from the dirt, rather than trying to jam the nozzle directly into the dirt. Will see...

Not good for gravel
Didn't do anything for the gravel under my sidewalk. Ended up needing to buy an auger bit to get through instead. It would be great if you only had sand or soil under there but I imagine most residential sidewalks have gravel as a base Makes a mess so you'll need a water pump to drain the trench behind it. You have to glue it onto 1 inch pvc pipe. Add it to a 1 inch pvc to mpt so that you can re-use it for future projects as long as you put a fpt on the pipe you are putting under the sidewalk
