Rod Rack holds tight
Over the last three or four years, I have probably broken two tips rattling around in the back of my pickup truck. In addition, when fishing from place to place, it's a real hassle to reassemble the rod, attach the reel, and thread the line at each stop. It subtracts from the overall quality of the experience and the amount of fishing time available. After doing a little bit of research, it looked like this product was the best at the cheapest price. But, would it hold? I took a risk and spent the money. When it arrived I discovered it worked primarily by magnetic attachment. No biggie... until I was stunned to discover that my 2001 Ranger did not have a metal hood. Who would've thought that a 10-year-old truck would be made mostly out of some other material than metal? Geez... it's a truck! After some desperate trial and error, I discovered that the roof was metal and that the rack gripped tightly to it. Now the scary part... Would the rod fly off in use? I wanted to fish several different spots on the the Savage River in Maryland and would drive and stop in multiple places. With a deep breath, I assembled an old fly rod (I did not want to risk a good one) and popped on a reel. I am happy to report that there were no issues with this model running at 55 mph in a periodic downpour. The rod was in the rack for approximately 3 hours as I drove from place to place and I did not remove it until I was ready for the long haul home. I did a few things to stack the deck in my favor. I used the hook keeper and tightened the line down to put pressure on the rod tip to make sure the sections would not wiggle free as the wind pushed to the rear. Then, to hold everything in place, I cranked down on the drag to keep the reel from moving and unspooling line. Nary a problem. I will trust this to my good gear in the future! BUT! Before you buy it, make sure you have a metal section of your vehicle to attach it!

Too short for fly reels
I was really annoyed to find that some of my standard and all of my large arbor reels jammed onto the hood of my truck when I placed my fly rods in this rack. The center post is about 1/2" too short so the reels can't hang clear. The vibrations of driving would have soon ruined both the reels and scratch the heck out of the truck. I took the hood mount apart and used a threaded stainless steel rod and some pvc pipe to extend the center post and now it works great but unless you want to buy a project that needs to be fixed before use consider a different rack.

A good product with some caveats
I’ve had mine for a couple seasons now. First season I unmounted them after each use, and they worked awesome. The good news is THEY WILL STAY ON—never had a problem with that even at 85 mph. Second season I left them on all season...that did not work out so well. The foam cushion on each bar was the first thing to come off—though, that is easily replaced. However, taking them off at season’s end was a PITA. It just would not release...it had adhered to the paint. I had to use acetone to remove the pad and the process destroyed the racks. So, I will certainly say they are awesome for short periods of use. If used this way, they will last many seasons, but I’ll add the caveats: Expect to replace the foam on the bars, and do not leave these on long term unless you want them permanently affixed.

Works Perfect
I would DOUBLE CHECK that your hood is Metal! You know what assuming does, I do... If you don't have a metal hood the company offers a suction alternative. Anyways, still worked great on the roof of the car and the other cars in our family with metal hoods And car roofs. The rods are also about 5 times* easier to take on and off if you have side rails on your vehicle. *(5x is an estimate by the reviewer, and is not linked to any supported data) We drove at 50-70+ mph with 2-4 fly-rods on the roof of the car on twisty roads. No problems. I have used a spin rod with it, with an open-face real that touches the hood, but with a little finagling its not a problem and can be adjusted so it doesn't touch and scratch the finish. Additional note, I wouldn't leave my rod unattended on the rack as it could be easily stolen, but the mounts being empty, especially on the roof next to a roof rack, are fairly inconspicuous. I wouldn't worry about the mounts themselves being stolen. Great product, though I wouldn't mind if they cost about $50 instead of $80. I'd love to buy another pair for myself.

Great for cars
I live in Florida and HATE two piece fishing rods. I also don't have a truck, I drive a Lexus. This little wonder allows me to transport my rods outside the car, without marking the finish of the car. The bottoms are rubberized and leave no marks. When you remove them you are supposed to place the bottoms together for storage. When I do this my 14 year old son can not separate the two so this should give you a good idea of how strong the magnets are. However, when you grab the built in tab you can easily peel it off of your car. They are made well and easy to use although the bungees can be tight (Which I consider a good thing). I regularly drive at speeds of up to 70 MPH with 4 rods on the car using these holders without any movement or and appearance as if I were about the lose the rods. More than this I can not go fishing here in Florida without some other angler asking "Where did you get those? What a great idea!" My highest recommendation.

I was amazed!!
So I have made many many purchases on amazon in the past and never felt the desire to write a review, however, this product changed my mind. I was having trouble transporting my fly fishing rods due to the overall size. I saw this advertised on amazon after a search and although skeptical I made the leap. My package arrived in 2 days and I removed them from the box and I was even more skeptical. I threw them in the truck and headed to the sierras. Just as advertised the holders were secured with magnets to the hood and roof. The rods were attached and I started off slowly. I was able to drive at speeds of 65mph (maybe a bit faster) on the highway between lakes and neither the rods or holders moved an inch. I was amazed!!! Great product and will highly rec!!!
