Finally, a reliable instant read theremometer , just not as reliable as I hoped

Choice came down to between this and a Thermapen. We were tired of the store bought throwaway items that fall apart or lose calibration after just a few uses. Its accuracy has held up over the months that we've had it, and we're quite pleased with this overall. If I had to put forward a really minor complaint, it is that the buttons don't have a lot of resistance, so if not held carefully, you will inadvertently hold the temperature reading, or go from deg C to deg F. Great product. Update a year later: Started to have trouble turning the unit on and off. Would take two or three tries, then it started to drift. If you are handy, read on... the trouble is the microswitch activated by swinging the probe out. It stopped making contact consistently, and even if the themometer turned on, the connection created sufficient resistance to make the temperature readings drift. Removing the microswitch and installing a small on-off switch was easy and made the original unit as good as new. As an aside, Taylor customer service, reached by e-mail, was excellent standing behind their product, but sent a defective replacement. New update: Taylor customer service quickly sent a replacement for the replacement, and the third time has indeed been the charm. The third unit (a different color but same basic layout) has been perfectly reliable since.

Very easy to use!

I was able to test the temp of the water coming out of the shower head easily even with the thin jet streams. Digital reading was also easy to see & the temp probe folded back into the body, which is good for storage.

fast enough

Tested going from hot tap water (116F) to water with ice floating in it (32F). It takes about 6 seconds to read from one to the other. That's pretty fast. The screen is large and backlit. The numbers are about 3/4 inch high. Very readable. The viewing angle is only adequate, somewhat less than I've come to expect from modern displays. It takes 2 AAA batteries, not LR44. (The amazon description mentions both types.) It is somewhat bigger than I imagined. 5.5 inches closed, 10 inches open. My first impression picking it up is that the plastic feels cheap, it rattles a bit, and the hinge is s little stiff. On reflection, this first impression is completely wrong. The hinge needs to be stiff so the probe won't move when inserting it into food. The rattling is just the three plastic buttons, which are sit atop clicky switches, rather than unreliable rubber buttons. As for the feel of the plastic, it actually reminds me a bit of an old telephone: smooth and hard. Only time will tell, but I think this thermometer is built to last.

Not waterproof!

This is the second of these I've owned. First one died after being dropped in a sink full of water while cleaning. About one month into ownership of this second one I tried just wiping it with a damp cloth and moisture built up under the LCD screen. I folded the thermometer arm in to stop power from running through the electronic components, and I left it out to dry. It took almost a week! Even though there are no more signs of moisture, I've questioned its accuracy ever since. At this price point, I would not purchase this again. Works fine otherwise, but no features that set it apart from a waterproof competitor.

Great thermometer for grilling

This thermometer is great. It is very accurate and very fast. You simply push the probe into whatever you were cooking and it instantly tells you the temperature. With this thermometer, you do not have to worry about under cooking or over cooking whatever it is you may be grilling. My wife thinks I am a great cook because of this thing. Her steaks come out perfect every time. It lights up very well at night so that you can see it. It’s easy to read even without my glasses. Lol. I would highly recommend this if you do any grilling and want your steaks, burgers or chicken to come out right.

Fastest temp in the West.

Best thermometer I've ever owned. Incredibly fast response time. Only improvement would be waterproof quality so I could drop it into shallow containers of fluid without fear that water touching where the probe meets the plastic would destroy the piece. Other than that, it's great! ((Edit June 18, 2018)) Item was purchased 11-05-2017 and the wire connecting the probe to the display has shorted out. When opening the probe the display lights when opening the probe, but only stays lit when the probe is open at like a 15-degree angle. Once it's opened past that the display shuts off again. I can't do much except temp running water with it since I can barely open it, so it's basically worthless now. I guess that's the plus side to the longer models that don't swing open with a moving part. List price is $70, purchased for $26.99 on a Lightning deal. Currently priced at $33 but still not worth it to me if it will barely last half a year. I'm a baker, having this die on me unexpectedly really put me out for the rest of the day's work, and I still don't have the problem solved.

It works

I don't think it's a thermocouple but a thermistor. It works fine though I've only used it twice. I'm impressed for the price. Amazon call me back after Christmas and thanksgiving for a longer period. It's solid and not a delicate feeling little thing. I'm still careful with it though. It is plastic. I like the F/C switch and it works quickly.
