Excellent fun kit. Excellent directions. Great project to do with kids.

The price is right. This is a fun little kit to do on a rainy day that I can include more than one child. This is NOT stepping stones. This kit comes with: 3 circle molds about the size of the palm of my hand. They are not very big. It comes with about 6 different templates. It comes with 3 packs of dry plaster that is mixable with water. It comes with ONE stir stick. A selection of gemstones. Some string if one wants to hang it. It comes with directions. Trying it out: A 5 year old joined me in making these. The directions made it super easy to do. Follow the directions from start to finish and it is easy. Mixing the plaster: There were 3 people making them. The 3 tablespoons of water varied for each of us. I used too much water. The second person used a little less. This was perfect. The third person was probably right at 3 tablespoons. Hers was right in between the two others. It DOES need to sit for 30 minutes so the gems don't sink in. I checked the plaster periodically by adding a stone from my design. Once the plaster dried a little the stones stayed put on top of the plaster without sinking. We did add food coloring to add color to the plaster. It worked very well!! We ended up with pastel pink, pastel purple and a pastel yellow. The gemstones: Eh. This is where I give it 4 stars. Though there are plenty of gemstones, we found there are more sought out gemstones. These we ran out of and ended up with rectangles and squares left over. The selection is fine if not using the templates. Using the templates, there are not enough triangles or big squares to do 3 templates. The stir stick: The kit comes with ONE stir stick. This is the other reason I gave it 4 stars. If 3 people are making them or one makes one at a time, one stir stick is not enough. We had to use old spoons because we had coloring to our plaster. 4 stars: Excellent fun kit. Just lacking enough triangles and big squares. It only has one stir stick.

Fun craft to do with kids

My kids love doing projects together and we always love doing National Geographic kits. This one did require some adult assistance but we had fun mixing the plaster and laying out their designs. The instructions were easy to follow and we had no issues with mixing and pouring the plaster. There are a few design templates you can follow, but my kids found it a little difficult to transfer the tiles over without messing them up. I do wish there were more tiles included. Ours took longer to dry than the instructions said so I just left them for a whole day. The string stayed securely and we have them hanging up. Overall, this was a fun project and my kids love seeing their finished products.

Lovely rainy day activity

I tried seeing what age this craft was for on the Amazon listing before I got it, but was unsuccessful. When I received it, the box said it’s designed for 8+ years. Although my son is only 2, he still thoroughly enjoyed making his mosaic tile with my help. I first mixed the plaster with 3 tablespoons of water, but I found that it was better with about 3.25 tablespoons. I poured it into the tray and waited 30 minutes. Keep this in mind in case you bust this out for your kid thinking you can start decorating right away! During this time, you can plan out how you want your mosaic tile to look. However since my son is only 2, he just enjoyed dropping the gems into the plaster at random. Afterwards, you wait about 90 minutes for it to fully set. However, I checked after 90 minutes and it was still quite wet, so I left it overnight and by the morning, it was all dry and ready to hang. With a toddler, the activity lasted about 10 minutes, so it was pretty fast. It’s a pretty neat rainy day activity, but older kids will definitely get more time out of it than younger kids. Nonetheless, my son had fun and it was just one more activity we could do together on a rainy day as we passed the time indoors.

Fun activity for the kiddies - NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Mosaic Arts and Crafts Kit for Kids

This kit makes a nice little gift for kids. It lets them have a different form of creative play they don't do every day. Everything is included to make the tiles, except the water. One thing I want to stress is being very cautious when handling the dry plaster. That's very important! Plaster dust is harmful to your lungs. You don't want to breath it. To be safe, wear a dust mask. I wouldn't let small children do that part themselves. But it offers a very good opportunity to teach them that some materials need to be respected and handled carefully.

Very disappointing.

We followed the directions exactly. Tiles sunk. We let the plaster dry much longer. Tiles still sunk. Any longer wait would mean the tiles could not be set. I recommend a kit where tiles are glued on instead and then grouted. It works much better! Can not recommend this at all!

Fun Art Project

I got this art/craft project to do with my 5yr old. It's a simple but effective kit. You get 3 mold, 3 bags of plaster, bag of gems, string, and a stir stick. The directions have you mix the plaster and let it sit for 30 min before adding your gems. You just have to be sure not to press them in too hard. Once its fully set its ready to hang or set out. I think these would be a cute gift for kids to make for grandparents or anyone special. Its also fun to set them in a garden. Great little project.

Interesting craft for 8 and up

I got this set, because I thought that it would be a fun way for my 8-year-old son to make some gifts for his grandmas. I'm not sure why, but I thought these were coasters. It turns out the molds and the mosaic pieces are a bit smaller than I imagined (see photos). They are meant to be more decorative and can be hung like an ornament if you use the cord that's included. There are several warnings about adult supervision being necessary, especially with handling the plaster, and it is pointed out in three different places that this is for ages 8 and above. A concern seems to be that you don't want to get plaster in your eye. I'm thinking we might make this more sciencey by wearing goggles. I like that templates are included, but this will take some patience in transferring the pieces. I'm hoping the finished crafts will be gift-worthy, but even if they aren't I think this will be a good learning activity.
