It's cool - but who's building the fort?

The Nat Geo branded 225 piece indoor fort builder set is pretty cool, but you just have to appreciate some of the limitations before you jump in an buy it. This kit comes in a fairly large box. You have a whole lot of long stick pieces, some short stick pieces, these blue hub pieces that have an angled adapter you can add, light green hubs, dark green hubs, and extension connectors. There are also some instructional booklets to give you some ideas of what you can build. For the most part, you'll be building things out of the long sticks. You just have to determine how you want to link them together. If you are primarily building cube structures, you'll likely want to use the blue hubs at the corners and then add the occasional angled piece so you can add an angled long stick plus short stick as a corner-corner cross sectional beam for support strength. If you want to make pyramids or triangular structures, you'll want to place the bendy light green and dark green hubs at the corners. It does take some effort to secure the sticks into the hubs, especially when using the light and dark green hubs. It takes even more effort to pull them apart. But once you build everything, there are included plastic clips that you can use to secure sheets to the structure. It can be a fun time for little kids and the 225 piece set allows you to make some fairly big forts. In terms of limitations, there are a couple things to consider. The first is that the age range is stated as 4+. This is accurate - for playing with the forts. 4-year olds don't really have the hand strength to secure the sticks into the hubs. 5 year olds have a hard time too. In terms of who's building the forts, it's going to be kids 6 and up, and even then, for bigger forts, it's going to require plenty of adult involvement. That's not bad, though. However, another consideration is if you have 4 year olds playing with the forts, they will inevitably break part of the fort and expose some fairly sharp, small sticks that quickly become amazing eye-poking and impaling hazards. So I don't recommend letting 4, 5 and 6 year olds using this unsupervised. My last complaint is - I just wish this kit had more blue hubs. The blue hubs and the optional light blue angled adapters allow you to build the best, most functional forts. There are plenty of long sticks in the kit, but having like, 8 more hubs would really let you make some nice, big forts. Overall, this kit is pretty cool and kids definitely have a good time with it. Just know that adults will have to be building the forts and then supervising the kids playing in them. And man...just a few more blue hubs and this would have been an easy 5-star rating.

Large kit. You need to help young ones with assembly.

I wish we had this when I was a kid. Who knew that a love of tinker toys could be combined with a love of fort building to create epic hideaways? Probably designed by people from my generation. It is great fun, but the parts are a bit hard for little ones to put together without your help. Oh darn. I guess I HAVE to join them in their adventure. That must be why you are capable of making some creations large enough for you to tuck into along with them. Be warned. Be prepared for cozy cuddles and story times from inside your many creations when they are tiny. Or maybe reenactments of horror film scenes with older children. It takes work, but it is great fun for all of you. It sure beats tipping over the couch to get more space like we had to do. I give it high marks for supervised play with kiddos over 3 with the caveat that you make sure that the pieces are rigidly secure. The box is heavier than most of the kid toys, and you don't want that weight collapsing onto your young ones.

Sturdy kit - probably more for 6-10yr olds

This is a great fort building kit - the pieces are surprisingly robust, and clever - I like the green foldy/bendy joints. The kit IS a little light on instructions, but it does have 6 example forts to build. The problem is that the instructions are a little light on details and it seems quite difficult for kids even at the upper end of the age-range to follow. Hah, even as a college-educated and engineering focused adult, I had a bit of a time (though maybe I am an idiot). Some of the designs are HUGE, we literally couldn't make the pyramid due to space requirements in the room we were building in. However, once created, the forts are pretty decent and make for great frames to hang blankets on. There are a lot of parts, the quality is pretty decent, but I do find the MSRP slightly high due to the lack of instructions and additional project plans, as well as the limited ability of kids in the age-range to actually build them. The box is pretty decently robust and will be a good place to store the parts - biggest downside is that it's not really long enough for any pieces to be left in partially-assembled. We'll probably end up buying a plastic tub to store the parts in. This does still very much inspire creative play - once the kids got the basics down, they were creating their own forts - of varying levels of strength and robustness. Overall, a pretty decent buy if keep an open mind at what you're getting into, and potentially for a slightly older range than the box recommends. FYI: I received this for “free” as part of the Amazon Vine Voice program but will still pay income taxes on the value of it, kind of like a contractor.

Fun Fort Kit but not for younger kids

These sure steps up the fort building game up from using chairs and pillow cushions however there is no way the age range is accurate. Maybe if you applied the age range as choking hazards, it makes sense, however I gave this to 4 kids (8 year old, 7 year old, and two 5 year old's) and there was no way they could even figure out where to start on this, but they quickly found the sticks make for good swords! Overall, I would say this is a great product and makes good forts, however it needs an adult or a much older child's help and I wish I had something like this when I was younger! I also wish it had a few more of the blue pieces since they are the most used when I was building.
