Good unless it breaks. Warranty is an arduous process!
These switches were working well until one of them stopped working. Over a few weeks, I noticed one of the switches kept staying on. I was always able to turn the light off eventually by manually clicking on/off button on the switch. However, it was kind of annoying because the reason I bought these was to save electricity by only turning on the lights when someone was in the room. I thought it was just some software bug or something like that. Fast forward a few weeks, and the light switch would NOT turn off the lights. I could still "talk" to the switch from the Kasa app. When I turned the switch "On" and "off" from the app, I could hear a tiny click coming from the switch in the wall, so I know the commands were received by the switch. I think the main relay for cycling the lights was fused closed. I tried to reset the switch, as well as force power cycled with my circuit breaker. Nothing fixed the issue. If it is the relay fused shut, as I suspect, it indicates TP Link did not use very good quality relays in this device. Keep in mind I have only had this device for two months, and it's already failed! TP Link should really use better quality hardware. Unfortunately I am about 3 weeks out from my Amazon return/replacement timeline, so I had to go through TP Link Warranty support. Man, compared to Amazon's support the TP Link support is an absolutely arduous nightmare. I first went to the main TP Link RMA page. There, I was directed to "register" the device to my account before contacting customer service for an RMA. So I tried to register the device. Unfortunately the system did NOT recognize the serial number of my switch and said it was invalid. I triple checked the serial number, and even tried all combinations of replacing 0 (the number zero) with the letter O in case I mis-read the serial number. Nothing worked. Apparently this must happen often enough, because TP Link even had a notice message directing me to the relevant support line to handle just this issue of the serial number not being recognized. At this point I was getting frustrated and tried calling the TP Link number Amazon sent me. That number directed me to a phone support line with a very long waiting period. That same number gave a pre-recorded memo that I should use the "Live Chat" feature on TP Link's website for faster service. So now I went to the Live Chat service. What ensued was a long and painful 30 minute chat session with the customer support tech asking me to perform all sorts of tests on the device, reinstalling the switch in different circuits, etc. Oh, and although the tech can take more than 5 minutes to respond to a simple query, you are not allowed to take more than 3 minutes to respond to them or else they terminate the chat automatically. So now that the tech has seemingly verified that my switch is indeed NOT working, I thought they would ship me a new one with a return shipping label for the broken one. Nope. They are going to send me an email "within a day" with further instructions for completing the RMA process. So in summary, the switch was fine while it worked, but if it breaks you are in for a terrible time dealing with TP Link's warranty support. If I had known it was going to take about an hour of calls/troubleshooting/chat I think I would have just cut my losses and tossed the switch. These aren't all that expensive, and my time is worth more than the cost of a replacement switch. I would recommend these only if you consider them to be a consumable product. If you want something more reliable, look over to Lutron. I have some of their Caseta switches, and they've been rock solid. Obviously this is anecdotal, as I am but one person with a few switches from each brand, and I could have happened to get a "one in a million" bad switch from Kasa and only good switches from Lutron. However, I am only going to buy the Caseta switches moving forward.

Pretty awesome, but Kasa needs to redesign for easier and more "proper" device installation
I picked Kasa as my go-to for smart plugs, switches, etc quite a few years ago. The big seller for me was not needing an extra hub, they connect directly to wifi. They all work great, though with the newest app version (Android 13, Pixel 6 pro) the app seems slower to load and grab the status of all the devices. Normally we just yell at Google to turn things on and off, so it's not too big of a deal. We really only use the app to set schedules, add new devices, etc. I have a really hard time waking up in the winter when you have so few hours of daylight, I love that the [non-motion] dimmer in our master bedroom can be programmed to turn on very slowly. Wife and I both have to wake up early to take meds, and it's nice to have the schedule set to come on at 6 at 1% brightness, then from 6:15 to 6:45 it gradually increases in brightness to a set brightness. Cons: TP-Link/Kasa needs to get with the program on wiring standards and what size devices fit in the in wall boxes. I've been out of the game for over a decade, but back when I worked for an electrical contractor we had single gang boxes (fit one device, outlet, switch, etc) and single gang deep. The box size you would install for new construction depended on the wire size (& quantity), and device. These devices are a little larger than a GFCI outlet, which typically is going to go into a deep box. The issue is that a lot of the places you might want to use these devices, you're going to have a 15A circuit and a standard depth box, so it's going to be a tight squeeze. If you've ever replaced your own dumb outlets or switchs you'll be familiar with the screw terminals, for ground, hot, and neutral (and if a GFCI outlet then hot wires have line and load terminals too). A majority of the Kasa devices I have ONLY have pigtails. So you end up with a wildly unnecessary number of splices to make and jam into a box. I think this is bad news bears for any DIY'er who hasn't had proper training in correctly splicing wires. (though you could make this argument for people not knowing how tight to screw down the terminals, the correct direction to loop the wires around the terminal, etc) I digress... given the huge size of the devices, there's not a lot of room for having to stuff up-to 3 additional wirenuts into the back of the box. They come with the tiny orange wirenuts, which in a dual or greater gang box is going to be way too small for all the neutrals. TP-Link/Kasa: please update all your models to have screw terminals instead of pigtails! Ok now that I'm done with my rant, I still love these devices! We use the basic motion sensor in the laundry room. Wife left the lights on all day, I'd forget too. It's wildly convenient to walk into the laundry room with an armload of laundry and the lights turn on for you. It's double convenient since our garage walks into the laundry room, so when you come home at 530-6 and it's already pitch black outside because time fell-back already, it's awesome when the lights come on for you. I thought I might have issues where the lights turn off on you while you're switching loads, kneeling in front of the dryer trying to fold things, etc. But they seem to stay on, and the default "time off" seems to be reasonable as well. Game changer, now I have to figure out where to install the dimmer version I picked up on sale!

Fairly good. Feel amazingly cheap though :/
Wife has told me she hates the feel of the switches, which i agree they do feel like the cheapest quality thin shiny plastic. But they do the job, sensing is good, reactivation can be a little slow when it turns off on you. Works really well with the kasa app when we have an internet connection (for some reason even though theyre meant to work through the router alone, if you lose internet connection but still have strong wifi..they dont connect. So somewhere they do rely on an internet connection unless my asus router is blocking wifi everytime it drops connection). But..they dont force you to enable location tracking like most app related products out of china atm. Big ???? These do fit into those tiny 1950's wall boxes for single switches, but its very tight, had to grind the screw plates down a little. And these are deep items which fill that box...so no place for wires and connectors, especially the twist on usa style connectors. As a result the two of these i installed sit at an angle on the wall. It was the only way to get them in the holes with the wires. But the convenience is good, and now were all on led bulbs having it turn on and off as mutch as it likes wont run the bill up (switching on a 100w incandescent bulb is meant to cost as much as running it for 2hours. Led's dont have that issue. As well as being 1/20th the cost to run them.
