Accurate, but stumbles on a few details one would expect at this price point.

I am reviewing this model purchased from another vendor, do I won’t comment about the price. I was skeptical about the claimed accuracy, especially in regards to the installed spirit level. Surprisingly it matches as precisely as one could divine on such a small format glass vial with a Starrett machinists level. So that’s a plus. Though if you need that level of accuracy you should be using a level like a Starrett. The laser line alignment with the laser mounted on a properly leveled milling machine and checked at 5 feet is level in a practical sense considering the line has a width of about 0.070, and about 0.040 at the laser aperture. Where I think there could be improvements are the battery holder/switch combination and the targets. When the “switch “ is far enough unscrewed to disconnect the battery, the o-ring that seals it does not actually touch the body, leaving it loose and open to the elements. I’m going to trim some off with a large. Also, good luck getting the batteries out. The last one gets pulled sideways by the magnets and you need to slam it out. Great for a precision instrument. And the targets... the good is that they are mostly accurate, about 0.015 variance between them, which is certainly sufficient for their intended purpose. But... the end that is held against the sheave under test is quite thin due to the recessed magnet. Any wear over time will affect accuracy (there will be wear using them on cast iron sheaves). Maybe not an issue in a practical sense, but for this price point, it could have been a better design. Lastly, the fit of the threads is abysmal, as in loose. I greased then with Superlube food grade grease, and they are ok-ish, but again, for this price point, hard anodized precision threads or some sort of UHMW insert would have seemed more appropriate. Overall it’s worth about half the selling price, in my opinion. Though it’s competition is probably the same.
