Is what I needed.
Purchase it as replacement. The original ball wore out and stuck the door, even after lubricated. This type of door stop needs to be adjusted periodically so the ball would not sit too high or too low. Replacement is simple, the tool to use is the needle nose plier. I replaced only the interior ball parts (keep the original mounting parts) and worked well. Or the whole could be pulled out by the plier. Recommended the product to my neighbors.

Perfect for my 1-3/8" thick wood/glass French doors
These were exactly what I needed for a new French door installation in my living room. The doors are 1-3/8" thick and 30" wide with glass the center panel made of glass. Like another reviewer stated, the black metal cover around the body of the ball and spring housing can be removed. The rest of this paragraph mainly pertains to those who have to install this on a bare frame that had not previously had a ball catch installed. I used a 13/16" spade bit to drill the hole on top. A 7/8" bit might work with the metal surround on the housing as was answered by another reviewer. I did not center the hole in the center of the door when I installed these since the catch plate that it comes with was much shorter than the width of my door frame. Off-centering the ball catch in the door allowed me to keep the end of the plate as close to the edge of the frame as possible and keeping the door gap consistent all around the frame. When preparing to attach the plate on the door frame, I first installed the ball spring on the door then open and closed it a few times using an 1/8" spacer between the door and the trim molding in the middle of the door frame. This allowed me to see where the ball was traveling and where it stopped. This may vary according to the material of which your door frame is made. My door frame was oak painted white. (Please don't crucify me for painting oak wood work white. It's a long story). After lining up the catch plate, I marked to two screw holes, and drilled those with a countersink bit to allow the plate to sit flush. To account for the center of the plate, I used a regular 3/4" drill bit to just remove enough wood in the frame so that the plate sat flush. The only thing that I would caution one to consider with this ball catch is the spacing that you have in the door frame. I had allowed the standard 1/8" at the top of my doors when I installed them. When I went to install the catch the lip around the housing sits about 1/16" high and the ball extended is about 3/32". I understand that the plate has a curved edge to push down the ball but it felt way too tight. Because of that, I planed off another 1/16" from the top of the doors to allow easier travel. Had I known about this, I might have installed my doors 1/16" lower. All things considered, this was a great price. My local Home improvement retailer had a limited selection and they were pricey. This was the finishing touch on my door project.

Simple enough to install
I bought this item to replace a defective one already installed. I just removed the old one and it's sleeve from the hole on top of the door and inserted this unit (which was a perfect fit since I measured it). Easily adjustable with the depth ring securing the bearing in. I'd say 10 minutes and you're done. (if the hole isn't already drilled, add 5 minutes to measure and drill the hole! I only indicate 4 stars due to "fair" build quality, but it does the job well.
