Fun gift for artistic ages 7 and up

Even though this says ages 10 and up, if you have an artistic kid or kid that needs a gift, 7 and up seems like the perfect age! Fun gift that takes some focus and concentration and will provide a few hours of entertainment.

Fun for kids and grown ups

With kits like this I usually use them with one of my nieces or nephews, but this time I kept this kit just for myself. I have been itching to try my hand at string art for awhile, and this kit was a blast. Everything I needed was included, though instead of tiny tack nails it uses pins as anchors for the string. A good option to avoid needing a hammer, but that means younger kids will definitely require adult help/supervision. Very young children will need to be kept away so they don’t get poked with or try to eat any of the pins. Same for inquisitive pets. I suggest having a small bowl handy to keep the pins in while you are placing them around the board rather than dumping loose on the table or pulling them from the small plastic bag they come in. Scissors are handy, as is a small tube of clear crazy glue to help secure the knots and prevent them from coming loose. A tiny drop is all you need on each knot. Instructions are written plainly and are simple to follow. What takes the longest is placing the anchor pins. Once that is done, the designs soon come to life. If you’d like more bling or sparkle, you can buy a metallic version of most of the string colors either online or at a local craft store. A sheet of peel and stick clear or colored crystals would be a pretty addition on the butterfly wings or center of the daisy. The end results of both string art designs are charming. They’re geared towards a much younger age bracket than mine, but who cares, right? My mid-40’s self had as much fun as any tween would, and that’s the goal. I’ve hung both pieces in our bathroom where the bright colors liven up the space. I’m not sure how long the paper butterfly wings will last, though. After completing these two pieces, I’m ready to create more. This kit certainly sparks creativity, and provides a knowledge base that will help a person design their own string artwork pieces. I understand why the maker used pins rather than nails or craft tracks due to safety and the target age of the kit, but I’d have preferred using nails. The pin heads are more visible than a flat nail head, and can’t easily be color matched to the various string like a nail head can be by using permanent markers, paint markers, nail polish, etc. But for a kit for crafty kids, this is perfect.

Fun craft, not super high quality

This is a fun craft for young girls (I’d say 7-12-year-olds). The instructions are simple and easy to follow, and the craft is easy to do. The only tricky part is you have to measure out the yellow string so that you use the right amount for the flower and the rest for the butterfly, and the measurement they give you may be difficult for some to figure out; kids will need help with this part. These are cute designs that girls can display in their room when they are finished. However, they are not that big or that durable. The pink paper that is the background was quite wrinkled and is very flimsy. It attaches to the foam board behind it with four small pieces of tape, so it can easily pull away from the foam, and the corners were already bending right out of the box. I wish they had used thicker paper for this piece. The other teal sparkly paper is a little thicker and will hold up better, but it is still paper, so you should be careful with it. This is an enjoyable craft, but don’t expect the finished result to last forever.

Lots of work

This string art project was fun but much harder than I expected. The box says for ages 10+. My 9 year old niece completed the flower herself but got frustrated a lot. She ended up taking lots of breaks so she could finish without getting too grumpy. I did the butterfly and it was not as easy as it looks, but was fun to finally complete. If you’re looking for a project to keep your loved one (or even yourself) busy for at least a couple of hours this is for you!

Cute

I got this as something for my niece to do when she visits, she did both patterns and really liked them. We also went to the store and got different colors for her to try, so this became reusable, we just wrap the string around note cards I cut into smaller squares, we keep those in a bag in the box. Very cute, good to kill some time on a rainy afternoon.

Great rainy day craft

My 9 year old daughter did this in one evening and was completely mesmerized. The only thing she needed my help with was tying double knots. The instructions are clear for a child to follow. Just stick pins in the design, tie the colored string in the design they explain, and out comes a very pretty craft. She was so proud of herself when she was done - money well spent. Highly recommended!
